For many years (H)CFC refrigerants have been used in the reefer industry because they are safe, have excellent thermodynamical properties and they are cheap. Some years ago though, it was confirmed that they are depleting the ozone layer. At the fourth meeting of the parties involved at the Montreal Protocol (Copenhagen, November 1992), new phase-out schedules have been established for CFCs and HCFCs. The CFCs have the largest impact on the ozone layer, which means that they need to be eliminated first: CFCs are completely phased out by 2000. This article has been presented as a paper by Ir M H Bruinsma of Grenco Marine at the Reefer 2000 Conference, which was held in London, UK, June 1994.
