Housing finance agencies in Rhode Island and Vermont have launched public awareness campaigns about the ed for low-income housing tax credit and other affordable housing projects in an effort to overcome local opposition to low-income housing. The Rhode Island Housing and Mortgage Finance Corporation (RIHMFC) campaign, called HousingWorks!, promotes tax credit and other affordable housing projects as workforce housing for police officers, firefighters, teachers, emergency medical technicians, college graduates and other service workers. "We're trying to get across the point that affordable housing is workforce housing to give it a more positive spin," said Dorothy Boisseau, RIHMFC tax credit administrator. RIHMFC is trying to get away from the perception of affordable housing tenants as welfare recipients, she added.
