HUD Budget Request Results In Program Winners, Losers As Core Priorities Get Boost

President Bush submitted a fiscal 2007 HUD budget to Congress which seeks more funding for Section 8, HOME, and homeless assistance programs while cutting community development, public housing, and housing for the elderly and disabled. The budget provides a total of $33.646 billion in discretionary budget authority, down from $34.268 billion (excluding hurricane-related supplemental funding) in fiscal 2006. Bernardi said during a budget briefing that the overall budget climate in Washington required a measured approach to discretionary spending, and some tough budget decisions had to be made.
