Single-Family Housing Starts Continue Recovery in April

Housing starts increased in April as the single-family sector continued its recovery with support from the expiring home buyer tax credit. Building permits, however, declined.rnThe seasonally adjusted annual starts rate was 672,000, up 5.8 percent from the March rate of 635,000. The single-family starts rate jumped 10.2 percent, from 538,000 to 593,000 - the fourth straight monthly increase - while the multifamily rate fell 18.6 percent, from 97,000 to 79,000.
