HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau recently announced the following new residential construction statistics for April 2017: 1. Building permits in April for privately owned housing units fell 2.5 percent from the revised March 2017 rate but were 5.7 percent above the April 2016 rate. Single-family home permits also fell in April 4.5 percent from March 2017. 2. Privately owned housing starts in April also fell 2.6 percent below the revised March estimate and were essentially flat with April 2016. Single-family housing starts in April were also flat from March 2017.
