HUD AWARDS $47M IN HOUSING COUNSELING GRANTS

HUD has awarded $47 million in housing counseling grants that will help approximately 1 million households find housing, make informed housing choices, or keep their current homes. These grants will support housing counseling services provided by 31 national and regional organizations, six multi-state organizations, 19 State Housing Finance Agencies (HFAs), and 207 local housing counseling agencies. Recent research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and the Urban Institute find that housing counselors provide substantial benefits for first time homebuyers and families struggling to prevent foreclosure. Grant recipients address the full range of housing counseling needs-including helping homebuyers evaluate their readiness for a home purchase, understand financing and down payment options, and navigate the homebuying process. These organizations also help households find affordable rental housing, offer financial literacy training to individuals and families struggling to repair credit problems, help homeless persons find transitional housing, and assist senior citizens seeking reverse mortgages.
