Designer David Ashen had a heady challenge with his latest, J House: he was tasked with turning a former Howard Johnson sandwiched between two highways in the affluent suburb of Greenwich, Connecticut (45 minutes outside of Manhattan) into not only a destination boutique hotel, but also a local hangout. To do so, he infused the public spaces-including restaurant eleveni4 Kitchen and sweet haven the Chocolate Lab-with what he dubs "a cozy, eclectic modern interpretation of Greenwich style that plays off the industrial nature of the building"-by mingling simple materials (exposed concrete, steel, reclaimed wood) with residentially inspired furniture and accents.
