From the rooftop of Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo, all the eye can see for miles around the ancient city are the same barrel tile rooftops on low-level buildings that have been there for decades upon decades. Not a newly laid flattop roof on a big-box store or shopping mall in sight. Working your way from the top down, the theme is much the same at street level, as I discovered on vacation to Europe with my husband and two daughters, ages 13 and 9.
