Decay resistance of wood treated with fluorinated waterproofing agents

Several fluorinated waterproofing agents have been tested for their ability to increase wood hydrophobicity and as a consequence of hydrophobization to elevate wood resistance against decaying fungi. Most of the tested compounds fulfilled the expectations in terms of hydrophobicity increment except for Zonyl~? 9027, which is an anionic phosphate fluo-rochemical. By contrast, most of the tested products were not able to inhibit wood colonization and degradation by decay fungi except for Zonyl~? 321, which is a fluorinated acrylic cationic copolymer resin. We attribute the high performance of this product to its cationic moieties, which permit a strong electrostatic interaction with the negatively charged wood surface thus allowing formation of permanent hydrophobic layers on the impregnated parts of wood.
