In pulp and paper mills, metal ions, such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), aluminium (Al), silicon (Si) and manganese (Mn), enter the processes with the raw materials, process chemicals, and make-up water. These metal ions have detrimental effects on the pulping, bleaching and papermaking (Colo-dette et al. 1988; Liden and Ohman 1997; Duong et al. 2006; Sundman et al. 2008). It is remarkable, that it is possible to determine the metal ion concentration in morphologically determined regions of the fiber cell wall by means of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (Tokareva et al. 2010; Tokareva 2011). Wood materials are considered to be suitable low-cost sorbents for removing heavy metal ions from waste water (Guo et al. 2008). Therefore, the understanding of interaction between metal ions and pulp fibers are of significant interest in process management and green environment.
