Severalyears have passed since the popularization of multimedia. Even as the first applications now start to mature, expectations for new ideas, new business, and strong growth continue to rise. Rapid improvements in the capabilities and functions of computers, communications, and audiovisual devices and systems, brought about by constant improvement in semiconductor technology and high-level software, paint a bright future for multimedia. New applications and human-oriented systems will benefit from these advances. Hitachi multimedia developments create new value and contribute to a bright and abundant information society for the 21st century. This report summarizes the profound societal change, effects, functions, and applications brought about by multimedia.
