As the scale of electric power systems becomes larger and larger, and economy becomes more important, technical development of pumped-storage power plants is under way to increase the unit capacity, head, and speed of pump-turbines and generator-motors. For example, the Kazunogawa Power Station of the Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc., which will have four units of unit capacity of 400 MW, a maximum net head of 728 m, and a rotating speed of 500 r/min is now under construction. For its first unit, Hitachi is now in the process of designing the pump-turbine and generator-motor. A 400-MW adjustable speed pumped-storage power plant was put into commercial operation in December 1993 for the Okawachi Power Station of the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. This epoch-making plant is a large-scale adjustable speed power plant, which has made it possible to adjust the input power in the pumping mode for an automatic frequency control during night service. This system enables the instantaneous control of power input and output of the generator-motor, and is also being considered as a power system stabilizer for the near future.
