Client/server systems are now being used all over the world, and standardization of such distributed computing environments is moving forward. In light of this trend, Hitachi released its Open Transaction Processing Monitor 1 (OpenTP1), which complies with international and industrial standards and inherits technologies and experience from our mission-critical on-line systems on mainframes. As the trend towards a distributed computing environment continues to increase, 3-tier (presentation, function, data) client/server systems are emerging. Furthermore, distributed object systems will be realizable when more distributed and flattened systems become widely used. Addressing this phase, Hitachi is providing Transaction Processing Broker, referred to as TPBroker, which is compliant with the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) 2.0 and Object Transaction Service (OTS) standards defined by the Object Management Group, Inc. (OMG). This article discusses Hitachi's new distributed environment products, and surveys the future directions in distributed computing environments.
