Professionalism and Economic Advantage in the Chemistry Profession in Australia, 1914-1932

During the First War World and the two ensuing decades, the enduring association of chemists within Australia, the (later Royal) Australian Chemical Institute (ACI), was formed and consolidated. There are four unpublished histories of the ACI, none of which stress economic advantage despite this being the dominating rationale at the time of formation. It has been acknowledged that the formation of the ACI was initiated in reaction to the formation of the Australasian Chemical Association (ACA), later the Australasian Association of Chemists and Metallurgists (AAC&M), but the latter has 'generally received short shrift from later historians'.
