During the Second World War, Australia pressedrnits neighbour, New Zealand, to send chemists tornwork in the munitions industry and twenty-ninernof the people involved have been identified here.rnMostly newly graduated with BSc and MSc degrees,rnthey travelled to Australia between mid-1941 andrnmid-1942, and were employed in munitionsrnproduction and related work after initial trainingrnat Maribyrnong, in Melbourne. Although bound tornreturn to New Zealand at the end of their service,rna number stayed in and others returned tornAustralia, so that only three-quarters of therncontingent resumed careers in New Zealand.
