The story of a little-known Australian collectorrnbegan for us in 1987, when a search forrnunpublished descriptions of colonial Melbournernfound reference to a letter containingrndescriptions of the city in the 1850s. Ratherrnthan being a travelogue of a page or two, thernmanuscript turned out to be more of a diary,rneighty handwritten pages running to a littlernover 20,000 words. The manuscript was arncopy by Sir W.V. Guise of Elmore Court,rnGloucester, of a letter written between 1854rnand 1855 from Henry Edwards of Melbournernto John Jones of Gloucester.'
