Research was undertaken on 63 students who were absent from school for an extended period of time between the 1989 and 1999 school years in town T, Niigata prefecture. This school's absenteeism rate was particularly high in comparison to the national average. 44 students (70/100) stopped going to school due to problems faced at school or due to their own medical condition, and were deemed "school phobic".
