The elections in May for the combined authority mayors, operating under devoluton deals, saw some close results, some surprises and some big names. Perhaps the best-known figure of the six new mayors - all of them men - is former Labour minister Andy Burnham, who won the contest to be mayor of Greater Manchester with 63% of the vote. His manifesto commitments included publishing a plan to tackle congestion and commissioning an urgent review of the condition and configuration of the region's busiest roads, 'working with businesses, road users and Transport for Greater Manchester to see what quick changes can be made to improve traffic flows'.
