Vehicles are more connected than ever to the world around them, and there's huge effort on a global scale to develop systems to keep up with this demand, including the development of automated vehicles. It's uncertain how quickly the transition to this more digital world will take place, and how emerging trends will play out. Some predict rapid change, whereas others warn that change will be more gradual. Anyone involved in traffic management policy, will be eager to know, for example, when physical traffic signs might be replaced with geospatial data to guide drivers instead. Ministers are very aware of the need for clear street signs. Sadly, 1,800 people are killed in road accidents each year, and human error is a factor in 85% of cases. Having clear signs on our roads plays a fundamental role in reducing risk. We would not move away from the system we have unless what replaced it was demonstrably as effective as the signs and markings we use today.
