In printing, change and innovation have become a way of life. Plates, papers and inks are evolving rapidly as printing companies attempt to do everything faster, better and cheaper. In the midst of all that innovation, you might think press chemistry would have gone the way of the buggy whip. After all, wasn't it just yesterday that waterless printing was about to eliminate the need for chemistry in the pressroom? In fact, press chemistry continues to be a hot issue in many print shops. Almost every day, we get calls seeking help to solve production problems. The reason is unintended consequences. Innovations are created to solve or improve a variety of prob- lems. In some cases, innovations have fixed the problems they were developed to solve and, in the process, created new problems no one expected. In other instances, problems that were pretty much eradicated by old technologies have flared up with new ones, and they have had to be solved all over again. And, the old solutions often don't work effectively with the new technologies.
