Thermal diffusivity of silicon carbide as a reference material for laser flash apparatus

The laser flash method is very useful method as the test method for the thermal diffusivity and is used to measure over a wide temperature range. This apparatus is needed a reference material for a system check and the evaluation of uncertainty. Akoshima (AIST, Japan) was developed to the isotropic graphite (IG 110) as a reference material for laser flash apparatus. The thermal diffusivity of IG 110 is from 1.3 × 10~(-5) mV to 1.0 × 10~(-4) m~2V~(-1) and used pilot study for CCT WG 9. The Pyro-ceram 9606 as BCR-724 reference material for thermal transport properties was developed by European National Metrology Institute and distributed by Institute of Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM). The thermal diffusivity of Pyroceram 9606 is a 1.9 × 10~(-6) m~2V~(-1) to 8.8 × 10~(-7)mV temperature range from 300K to 1300K. We established a laser flash system temperature range 150K to 700 K in vacuum or inactive gas atmosphere and the development of reference material for this system. The thermal conductivity of SiC (slilicon carbide) ceramics was varied by additive materials and black color is suitable to the laser flash method. The thermal diffusivity of SiC is controlled between IG 110 and Pyroceram 9606, and from 4.4 × 10~(-5) m~2V~(-1).
