Blu-ray will not result in disenchanted consumers and disaster for the AV industry, says Jon Thompson, but next year's HD-Ready displays may make today's look very poor indeed. Doom. That was the mood at the Bristol Hi-Fi show this year. This is the UK version of CES for AV, or as close as it gets, and the disposition was surprisingly negative. There was much hand-wringing, with smaller British companies questioning how they might compete with larger Japanese corporations. Oh yes, the doom-mongers were out in force, spreading fear that next-generation DVD technology would be a disaster and that consumers were disenchanted.
