If the web-hype and chatter on the US forums is any guide, then PS Audio's multichannel GCA-MC power amplifier is creating quite a stir in its native homeland. The headline is a claimed 7kW output for the seven channel version. Yes, seven thousand watts! Out of the crate, the CCA-MC is remarkably understated for a US product, particularly one offering such outrageous spec-sheet eye-candy. The case is chunky matt aluminium with a single blue 'power-on' glow across the fascia - even the PS Audio badge is actually a simple combination of logo and power switch. The design is completely modular and based on a chassis with seven bays and a single mains inlet. Each bay can accommodate an independent, cool-running Class D power amplifier module of 100W, 250W or 500W. The UK distributor, Signature Systems, sensibly offers just six variations on this theme: five- and seven-channel versions fitted with identical 100W, 250W or 500W power modules. Our test unit had five of the latter. Of course, 5 × 500W does not add up to the 7000W claimed earlier because this refers to the output of seven channels into 4ohm, each delivering a full 1 kW. Typical of this calibre of multichannel power amp, the rear panel supports both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs, and a suite of suitably quirky custom-designed speaker terminals. These have compression clamps that make fitting 4mm banana terminals tricky but very secure. Somehow that headline of 7kW (5kW in this instance) sired a preconceived notion in my mind that the sound would be boisterous, brash and brazen - like an American muscle car of much attitude and little grace.
