When I were a lad (misty eyes, slight crack in the voice...) hi-fi headphones looked like industrial ear defenders. They were big, heavy, enclosed and exerted quite a high clamping force on the head to ensure that their earpads sealed around the ears. The height of sophistication was to have oil-filled ear seals, which squidged around your cranium with greater facility than mere foam-filled ypes. Only telephonists and radio operators wore headphones resting on the ears, and they weren't hi-fi.
