Their stunning debut album [We Just Did What Happened And No One Came, 2005) seemed to pass almost unnoticed by many critics, so it was very heartening to see that, some months after we had raved about it, Twice Born Men was awarded a well-deserved Mercury Music Prize. I must admit that, when I received it, I was worried that the band's main songwriter, Tim Elsenburg, couldn't improve on that first album but as soon as the heart-swelling chorus of 'Truth Only Smiles' kicked in, I knew everything would be just fine. Elsenburg's cracked yet commanding voice delivers a stirringly emotional impact, his inscrutably aching lyrics are devastating and his glitchy ambient/orchestral musical arrangements are sumptuously gorgeous.
