MartinLogan's rated 91 dB sensitivity for the Summit X is considerably higher than we recorded, our pink noise figure being 4dB lower at 87dB. But bear in mind that this speaker has a narrower radiation pattern than moving coil alternatives, so sound pressure level will fail off less rapidly with distance. As with the Spire (HFN April '09) the overall response trend at 1 m slopes downwards towards high frequencies and is quite uneven in the range 1.5kHz to 6.5kHz due to the presence of diaphragm resonances in the curved electrostatic panel [graph 1, below], which are also clearly visible in the cumulative spectral decay waterfall [graph 2, below]. These two features combined to give a response error of ±4.7dB for both of the review pair, caused by small differences in the frequencies of the diaphragm resonances, which are presumably affected by the tension applied in manufacture. These disparities give rise to the high pair matching error but they are inherently narrowband and, subjectively, of less significant as a result.
