We have now had five Boult versions of this visionary symphony on CD: this isn't the Prom performance issued on BBC Radio Classics but from a wonderfully balanced Cheltenham concert given in 1972 - transfers are by Tony Faulkner. It's not that different from Boult's 1967 NPO studio recording for EMI yet has the extra electricity of a live event. Vaughan Williams' Tallis Fantasy makes a nice complement, then two slighter British pieces by Bax and Patrick Hadley (LPO, 1969) follow and, more important, the BBC SO strings in Berg's Lyric Suite (Maida Vale Studios, 1966).
