Having survived two acclaimed but obscure bands, Minty and The Servant, the Paris-dwelling Black now offers up this storming solo debut, which leaves his previous incarnations in the dust. His self-confessed influences (Prince and hip-hop) are much in evidence on Un - the title being the French word for '1' - but considerably more significant are his ability to craft ridiculously hooky melodies and his near-genius gift for arranging. The perfectly played guitar solo in 'Ecstasy', for example, arrives precisely when it should and disappears as soon it has done its job. If the pounding, trippy, cosmic 'Alone' isn't a gigantic hit, and if a million babies aren't conceived to the dreamy 'Cocoon', then the nation has definitely lost the musical plot and Simon Cowell has won.
