Add a Consonance Reference 40 to your system and you're likely to have friends asking 'What's the new amplifier?' It's arguably bigger than it needs to be to house the circuit board inside, which carries two 12AX7 (ECC83) double-triode tubes for the MM amplification stage, plus a step-up transformer to provide the extra gain for moving-coils. There is also a third and larger tube, a rectifier for the power supply, but the mains transformer itself is in a separate small box, connected to the main unit via aim cable.
