Bear with me, please, while I rave about Marling yet again. Her third album confirms what was obvious from the start: that lyrically and melodically she's easily the best out there. Working again with producer Ethan Johns, she's delivered a noticeably more rough-textured set of songs than on 2010's I Speak Because I Can without sacrificing any of her intellectual credentials. Arrangement-wise, this is better than either of the first two, her tight-but-loose band creating powerful effects without lacking subtlety. Marling's command of her voice continues to grow, caressing her words, bending them to fit the sense of her songs. Lady Caga will sell more copies but Laura Marling will, in the long run, touch more hearts.
