For many enthusiasts, changing from an integrated amplifier to a separate preamp and power amp is the logical next step when planning the next upgrade. Separating the control and power sections of an amplifier increases system flexibility and offers further opportunities for upgrading at a later date -particularly if your loudspeakers can be bi- or tri-amped. It's been 18 months since we last assessed a group of pre/power amplifier combinations, this month's test group including the NAD C165BEE/C275BEE combination that scored so highly last time around. Given its reasonable price and excellent performance we thought it might provide a good benchmark while reassessing its sound when auditioned in different company.
