With a (contactless) air bearing, air is continually pumped into a tiny gap between the mating surfaces of the bearing. Although the air escapes, sufficient pressure is maintained to keep the surfaces apart under load. In this instance both the platter and arm are supported on a cushion of air, realising the promise of true radial or linear tonearm tracking and escaping the compromised geometry of pivoted arms.
