Rare are the times when pros and audiophiles agree on anything, but JBL's monitors from the 1960s were so 'right' that domestic versions were created - and became enormous sellers. At the behest of recording engineer Robert Fine, who wanted 'small but robust' monitors for his control room, JBL devised the 4310 3-way, which evolved into the 4311, with more tightly-arranged drive units. Word spread and JBL was driven to offer the speaker to consumers, resulting in a campaign that told customers they could hear recordings in the home exactly as they sounded in the studio.
