MARTIN VATTER

Some people see colours in music; Martin Vatter does the reverse, producing piano pieces from paintings. This is his second trip to Germany's Franz Marc Museum, here taking inspiration from four of Marc's own expressionist and colourful works. The PDF of liner notes reproduces these in sufficient resolution to study onscreen, which adds something to the Jarrett-like journey through drifting rhythms defined by Vatter's arpeggios and contemplative cascades of melody - darkening for the final piece, which is based on an abstract Marc composition from 1914, two years before he died near Verdun.
