As this is being written, the press is buzzing with news that the best-selling UK female vocalist in the USA in 2011 was not Adele but Sade, a recluse who issued only seven albums in 28 years. The explanation for this anomaly is due to this LP and the US craze for 1980s 'cool', a genre almost subsumed by the other movements of the era. Listening to it again reminds us that it was a brave release in which style was marketed over substance, yet the substance was there, too. She was, and remains, the Nina Simone of the Me Generation, but now a younger one has discovered her. This LP remains gorgeous, if aloof, like the dying cry of analogue as CD was whelping digital.
