In the 1960s and 1970s, says Peter Thomas, 'The BBC developed their loudspeakers 50% by measurement and 50% by listening. They would design the speaker, build four prototypes, and put them into four studios, together with a book for comments. They'd leave them there and let people use them for about three months. 'Then they would collect them up, read the comments, adjust the speakers, sometimes invite certain engineers down to come and listen, fine-tune them. Then build more prototypes, put them into studios, get more comments - and this process could take years - until they were happy with the design.
