Nelson Pass first came to the attention of American (and America-watching) audiophiles as the creator of novel amplifier circuits when he founded Threshold Electronics in 1974. Threshold's most famous power amplifier, the Stasis, took as its design theme the fact that if you keep the voltage across and current through a transistor constant then it will generate no distortion - hence the product's name and its use of features like cascode circuits. He left Threshold in 1997, six years after establishing Pass Labs, and First Watt came into existence as a vehicle for his more left-field designs in 1998. He has held six patents on amplifier design. A separate web site is devoted to Pass's many DIY amplifier projects , and this year marks 30 years since he began writing articles for Ed Dell's Audio Amateur publications.
