If you saw the New Year in with the LA-born singer's arresting performances on the Jools Holland show, you'll guess there's more to discover in Porter's well-timed second album. With warmth, power and sincerity, he makes us hear 'Work Song' and 'God Bless The Child' with fresh ears, but of course what's really special is Porter's way with his own songs. They are hummably melodic, rooted in soul idioms but with a twist of jazzy subtlety too, and enhanced by the horn arrangements of long-time mentor Kamau Kenyatta who produced Porter's debut album, Water. And the well-honed, faultless support of his regular musicians sets Porter free to create a mood, make a point, tell a story. Brilliant and compelling.
