It was just over a year ago that The Sonus faber was unveiled, at £ 140,000 one of the world's most expensive loudspeakers and, with just 30 pairs made, one of the rarest. Now the Italian company has taken core design elements from this formidable flagship to create another limited edition loudspeaker - the Aida. Like The Sonus faber, the Aida's 1725x482x767mm (hwd) cabinet is shaped like a lyre, which is said to provide structural strength while providing the speaker's designers with a significant degree of control over the energy emanating from the drivers within. Again, the cabinet comprises individual layers made from cross-grained Okoume plywood decoupled by the use of a visco-foil insulation material. Inside, the enclosure is braced by way of a series of sub-structural ribs. The method used to decouple the Aida from the floor also echoes that used for the The Sonus faber only here a 'floating bridge suspension' system has been brought into play. Dubbed Zero Vibration Transmission Technology, it is said by the company to work in a similar way to a leaf spring.
