I well remember the aged composer attending a Halle performance of his 'London' Symphony when he'd told Sir John Barbirolli he wished he 'could still score like that'. Now Sir Mark Elder, with a much developed orchestra, gives us this live version. It's beautifully played but frustratingly recessed in sound. He seems to see the work, notably in movts (ii)(iv), as darker, more tragic than others (including Boult) - the scherzo misses a certain skip in its step too.
