When Joe Harriott is remembered now, it's too often only for his late-1960s co-leadership of John Mayer's Indo Jazz Fusions, a collaboration ended by Harriott's illness and death in 1973 aged 44. But this collection covers the records he made before sax met sitar. Starting with his first London quartet date from 1954, the four CDs reveal his work with the short-lived Ronnie Scott big band and even with strings. Then there is the 1960 session once billed as 'Free Form', and his last quartet tracks from 1967. Sound quality is variable, and some tracks also appear in a Properbox devoted to drummer Phil Seamen.
