Anyone who's done a pub quiz may well have been asked to name the first ever number one album in the UK. The answer? Songs For Swingin Lovers!, Frank Sinatra's March 1956 release on Capitol Records which spent two weeks at the top before being knocked off its perch by the soundtrack to the movie Carousel. Unleashed as rock 'n' roll was changing the face of music in the US, the album was unashamedly up-tempo, teaming Sinatra for a third time with the arranger Nelson Riddle to create a jazzy sophistication that has rarely, if ever, been matched.
