When did one product mark such a sea-change in the thinking and doing of its makers, as did the B&W Nautilus 801? Launched in 1998, this speaker was a true flagship, topping an unusually coherent new range. It looked stunningly different from the norm, yet when the technology was explained, it was clear that form really had followed function. It was marketed as a high-end domestic rather than a 'pro' speaker, and yet it was first installed as a monitor in the most famous of recording studios, Abbey Road. And it seemed to usher in a new era for B&W, as the UK's largest specialist loudspeaker company headed for world domination.
