Every musical genre from every historical period has its defining characteristics: the ornate flourishes of Baroque trumpets, the upper-octave obstacle courses for the operatic coloratura, the call-and-response horn arrangements of swing music, the screeching castrati vocals of '80s-era rock. Like these, countless other stylistic fads have enjoyed their season, provoking gasps of amazement when first heard, gasps that eventually faded into yawns of boredom as music fans grew jaded and turned elsewhere for novelty and emotional fulfillment.
