In case you're a fan of American Dad! and you know that Rachael MacFarlane voices the cartoon character Hayley: no, this isn't a gag. The thing is, I'm currently obsessed with the Great American Songbook and wanted a recent album rather than my usual 1950s Capitol and CBS classics with which to savour my favourites. Ms MacFarlane, it turns out - this is her debut album - is an astonishing vocalist. The recording is delicious, the performance spellbinding. Her 'Makin' Whoopee!' is bliss, and she applies the same 1950s vibe to some rock standards, too.
