Until comparatively recently, there had been no culture of hi-fi in China. Thanks to the country's tumultuous modern history, there was relatively little consumerism until the late 1980s. But since then a number of Chinese electronic component manufacturers have diversified into fullblown audio separates, and now China's hi-fi industry is coming of age. We saw the same pattern with Japan some 40 years earlier of course: at first its hi-fi was derided, then bought in large numbers, then revered. There's no reason why this can't happen with China too.
