What goes around certainly comes right back around in the wonderful world of hi-fi. Leafing through the Hi-Fi News archives, I was both surprised and mildly amused by a feature from Oct 1979 describing the renaissance of valve amps. In practice, this is a revival that's been going strong ever since, spawning entirely new companies and even defining some audio scribes' career-long modus operandi. So if you thought the rash of novel tube amps was a relatively I new phenomenon, turn to our 'From The Vault' feature (p132) and prepare to be enlightened. There's also an irony in the closing thoughts of that retrospective from '79 where the writer - a fierce exponent of tubes over the modernity of transistorised solid-state - fondly anticipates a time when the archaic process of spinning-up an LP is replaced by a more robust and musically faithful digital source!
