Good live jazz is hard to find. For every glorious sound of surprise there are a dozen gigs with a bored quartet sleepwalking through hackneyed changes, while strenuously avoiding any recognisable tune. Good jazz on film is even harder to find. For every movie with jazz content that's worth the price of viewing there are at least a dozen turkeys where the acting is dire and the musical content a scrappy afterthought. Since kidhood I've seen just about every movie with jazz on board, good, bad and indifferent. So I thought it would be good to recommend a few of the best, and warn against some of the worst, with special heed paid to the musical and audio quality.
