摘要

A tall, elegant figure (reminding one of Sir Malcolm Sargent) can be seen in rare film conducting the overture to Die Fledermaus. It's Leo Borchard, appointed as the first postwar artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic in June 1945. Then, only two months later, he's accidentally shot one night by an American soldier (as happened to Webern, in Austria, within weeks). So in October the interim directorship passes to a young Romanian, Sergiu Celibidache. He'd made his debut with the orchestra in an outdoor concert on the 29th of August, aged 33. Although his father had wanted him to take up politics, after his studies in Bucharest and Paris, Celibidache went instead to the Berlin Hochschule fur Musik in 1936 and later found work with the RIAS Orchestra. Newsreel footage shows him in rehearsal with Menuhin in 1946: the violinist making a gesture of rapprochement with the German people. In May 1947 Furtwangler returned to his old Berlin orchestra, remaining with them for a further seven years.
