To use online vernacular, 2016 saw stereo 'trending'. Multi-speaker immersive audio, mainly Dolby Atmos because DTS pretty much lost interest in promoting DTS:X, went the way of 5.1 'surround in a box'. Real world families just can't be bothered with speakers round the room, especially not extras in the ceiling or firing upstairs to annoy neighbours. Meanwhile, more and more of the MP3 music masses were discovering the pleasure of handling a physical disc, and reading about the music - who wrote it and who is playing it - with the bonus of being fireproofed against music loss from PC crashes and stolen mobiles.
